  • Tribute Finalizing Plans on Second Course

Tripp Davis and Justin Leonard are planning the new course to mirror the first and earliest American golf courses.

THE COLONY -- Just when we thought The Tribute Golf Club could not be enhanced to entice us more -- and it is hard to improve on excellence -- an announcement has been released that the long-awaited construction of the club’s 2nd golf course is set to begin in a few months.

Wynne/Jackson and Matthews Southwest, both headquartered in Dallas, are the residential and commercial development companies launching the project.

Kelly Hardwick with Anderson/Hanson/Blanton public relations firm located in Addison, said: “The new course is a Justin Leonard and Tripp Davis design that will be complementary to the old course.”

Davis designed the first course, which opened for play in June 2000 as a tribute to the birthplace of golf, Scotland. The course simulates some of the finest golf holes that exist on earth.

“I played a lot of the courses over there and seeing such an accurate rendition of the holes close to home is nice,” said Leonard, a Dallas native who won the British Open at Royal Troon in 1997. “A lot of people will not be able to play in Scotland but they can experience it [at the] Tribute.”

Hardwick added: “Where the old course is a Scottish links-style course, Tripp and Justin are planning the new course to mirror the first and earliest American golf courses.”

“The challenge is to make the course enjoyable for all types of golfers,” Davis said. “The key is finding the right balance. That’s what we’re working hard on right now.”

The new course design will not simulate any specific holes. The main characteristics will be soft greens, larger flowing bunkers, water features and frontages. The overall topography will be dramatic with more elevation changes and trees.

“We’re going to make it look like it’s been there for a 100 years,” Davis said. “There are going to be eight holes on the water and you’ll be able to see water from all but four holes.”

Final planning of the course is nearing completion and the staking of the holes is scheduled for the fall of 2007.

”There really isn’t a course like the Tribute now,” Leonard said. “The new course will only enhance that. We’re building on the great reputation of the old course.”

With Leonard’s experience of playing the finest courses in the world and Davis’ proven golf course design expertise, this promises to be a winning team.

The Tribute Golf Club is located on Lewisville Lake, north of The Colony off FM 423. Go west on Boyd Road 3.5 miles to the clubhouse.
