  • UT Men’s Golf signs four to National Letters of Intent

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas head men's golf coach John Fields announced the signings of a South African and three Texans to National Letters of Intent. Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa), Devin Miertschin (El Paso, Texas/Hanks HS), Alex Moon (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) and Brett Spencer (Plano, Texas/Plano West HS) each signed National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period and will join the Longhorns' program in the Fall of 2008.

"I am very excited about our four signees for the fall of 2008," Fields said. "Size and strength mark this class, with Devin Miertschin standing 6-4, and Alex Moon and Brett Spencer are right there with him. Dylan Frittelli continues his ascent as one of the best golfers in South Africa, and our three Texans will figure prominently at the 2008 Texas UIL Class 5A State Championship. Each of these young men have competed successfully at the national level, and they all love the game of golf."

Frittelli made a name for himself at the 2007 Callaway Junior World Golf Championship last summer in San Diego, California, as he won the 171-player, 72-hole event with a five-under 283. Frittelli shot rounds of 70, 70, 69 and 74 to win the tournament held on the south course at the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

"Dylan's performance at Torrey Pines, the site of the 2008 U.S. Open, exemplified his talent," Fields said.

Selected to the 2007 Elite Squad by the South African Junior Golf Foundation, Frittelli ranks as the top junior player in South Africa with a stroke average of 69.92 thus far in 2007. Frittelli added a tie for 13th place at the 2007 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup held last summer in Japan.

Miertschin, who ranks 33rd nationally among American boys' golfers by Junior Golf Scoreboard, is the highest-ranked high school senior in Texas. Miertschin reached the second round of the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship last summer in Augusta, Missouri, and captured the 2007 Texas Cup in September at the University of Texas Golf Club.

Miertschin also tied for 13th place at the 2007 Westfield Junior PGA Championship. The 2007 Amateur Golfer of the Year in El Paso, Miertschin is a two-time El Paso City Amateur Champion, a three-time All-City selection and has won the last three Texas UIL District 1-5A Championships.

Moon, who ranks 52nd nationally among American boys' golfers by Golfweek, captured the 2006 Texas State Junior Championship and the 2006 EDS Byron Nelson Junior Championship. Spencer, his teammate at Plano West High School, captured the 2006 AJGA Fidelity Investments Junior Championship and took third at the 2007 Texas UIL Class 5A State Championship. He also reached the match play round at the 2005 U.S. Junior Championship

"With our outstanding course at The University of Texas Golf Club, our terrific practice facility at the UT Golf Academy and our new clubhouse set to open on March 1, 2008, we are excited about our future," Fields concluded.
